R136a1 is a wolf rayet star located at the center of R136, the central condensation of stars in the open cluster NGC 2070 in the Tarantula Nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud, approximately 163,000 light years from Earth. As of 2017, it has the highest mass and luminosity of any known star.
